Shibas are typically a healthy breed. There are some issues that may cause problems for you at a later age, and they can be very costly. We are not veterinarians -- if your dog has health issues, by all means take them to a licensed veterinarian.


  • Luxating patella

    Luxating patellas are a common condition in the breed. The patella, or kneecap, is part of the stifle joint (knee). In patellar luxation, the kneecap luxates, or pops out of place. There are varying degrees of luxation. Some of which may require surgery. If your dog's parents are checked and cleared, it lowers the risk that your puppy will be affected.

  • Glaucoma

    Glaucoma is a condition in which high pressure occurs in the eye, with a failure of normal fluid drainage from the eye. In people, the process is slow. In dogs, the condition is sudden, painful and causes blindness.
